Dr Auger a obtenu son diplôme de M.D. en 1978 et son certificat de spécialiste en microbiologie médicale en 1982. En 1983 et 1984, il a fait un postdoctorat à l'Université du Maryland et dans un laboratoire du NIH à Washington. En 1985, il revient à l'Hôpital du Saint-Sacrement à Québec et fonde le Laboratoire des Grands Brûlés, qui devient rapidement le Laboratoire d'Organogénèse Expérimentale, afin d'y implanter la technologie des substituts épidermiques. Depuis sa création, le LOEX a augmenté ses effectifs et l'envergure de ses travaux scientifiques en médecine régénératrice tout en continuant, sur demande des chirurgiens traitants, de produire par génie tissulaire des substituts épidermiques autologues pour les grands brûlés de Montréal et de Québec. Le LOEX fait partie du Centre de recherche du CHU de Québec-Université Laval.

Même s'il s'intéresse aux travaux poursuivis dans l'ensemble du LOEX, les projets scientifiques de Dr Auger sont plus spécifiquement liés au génie tissulaire de la peau, de la cornée, des vaisseaux sanguins dont ceux de petit calibre et des valves cardiaques par la méthode d’auto-assemblage. Récemment, il a débuté un projet permettant la reconstruction de tissus osseux grâce à l’acquisition d’un stagiaire post-doctorant, en collaboration avec Dre Julie Fradette. Il a ainsi produit près de 200 publications scientifiques.

Il a dirigé les travaux du LOEX durant 35 ans, notamment dans une nouvelle infrastructure de 55 000 pi2 destinée au génie tissulaire et à la médecine régénératrice. Le nouvel édifice, qui a été inauguré au début 2010, a été rendu possible grâce à des subventions de la FCI, du gouvernement du Québec et d'autres sources. Dr Auger est d’ailleurs le principal investigateur de ces nombreuses subventions menant à ce centre technologique.

En 2003, Dr Auger a été reçu Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Québec (CQ) et il est membre élu de l'Académie Canadienne des Sciences de la Santé (MACSS) depuis 2005. En 2010, il a été nommé membre de l'Académie des Grands Québécois et a reçu la Médaille de la Gloire de l’Escolle, un prix des grands diplômés de l’Université Laval. Finalement, en 2013, ses confrères lui ont remis le prix d'excellence du Collège des médecins du Québec pour sa carrière remarquable.
